Hulyo 7, 1988

Case # KJGM1771

July 7, 1988

Farmers have filed a complaint that their livestock has been found mutilated and in some cases eaten by a wild animal. The attacks only happen during the night with some of the farmers unable to see what the cause was. Testimonials of the farmers are included in the report.

Joselito Guevarra, age 52

“I was out at night waiting for whatever it was that was killing my pigs. There was a giant blur of black and I couldn’t make it out It may have been as large as a bull. I saw it come into the pig sty and attacking the pigs one by one. It was a slaughter.”

Teresito Cruz, age 58

“I only heard the sound of the pigs as they squealed.. I don’t know what it was, but it was cruel. It bit the throats of my pigs and left some of them to bleed out.”

Alfonso Moreno, age 63

“It was an aswang, I’m sure of it. In these parts of Marinduque there are aswang that can change their form and only hunt pigs.”

Vicente Cabarro, Age 61

“It was a surprise. I was sound asleep when I heard the squealing of my pigs. The moment I went out I saw their bodies all on the ground. Something had taken bites out of their throats.”

Paolo Nesperos , age 43

“It might be some of the other farmers, they don’t like that the other pigs are growing fatter than theirs so they take revenge by killing the pigs.”

Whatever the case, the killings stopped 5 months after they were reported. Coincidentally or not it was also the time when Teresito Cruz had moved away, the other farmers blame him for their pigs being slaughtered, but there is not enough evidence against him for the police to act.

English Version

The sun shone with an unforgiving glare, but this did not stop the two friends from resting their wings upon a tree and greeting each other warmly.

One had just fled from captivity in a faraway kingdom while the other had sought forgiveness from their king. It had been an exceptionally challenging time in the lives of both these great birds, but they were thankful for each other’s company.

“Tell me your story, old friend,” the great bird, Sumayang Galura, requested.

“It started when I was spending the night on the Piedras Platas, as I always do.”

“Your tree of diamond?”

“The very same. As the sun was setting, I began to sing the first of my seven songs, when I had finished with the seventh, I did not realize that there was a human below me and my droppings had fallen on him.”

“He then turned to stone”

“That he did. Some humans just don’t realize what they get themselves into. The next day the same thing happened with another human that fell asleep at the foot of my tree, I didn’t know they were brothers then.”

“What happened then?”

“The human’s other brother came forth and captured me while I slept. He stayed awake during my songs and avoided my droppings until I fell asleep. He turned his brothers back from stone, but they did not appreciate their freedom. They beat the brother that freed them and took me to their king.”

“Will the cruelty of humans never cease?”

“I would not sing my song to heal the king until my true captor returned, and he did. I sang and my song revealed the duplicity of the two brothers, they would have been banished if not for the forgiveness of the brother that freed them.”

“He sounds like a naïve human.”

“After that, I was not treated badly, but I yearned to stretch my wings and fly through the sky once again. I had this opportunity when one of the brothers just released me. I think it was to frame the good brother as a fool, but that is just my guess.”

“It seems you have had a great ordeal, old friend.”

“I have had an adventure, as what fills most of our lifetimes. Sometimes they come to us and we do not have any choice in the matter. My captivity has only made me more grateful for the freedom I now possess.”

“Wise words, I would expect no less from you.”

The sun set as the two great birds continued their conversation. The star’s light gave their feathers a brilliant glow as they talked late into the night.

*Note this story is in Tagalog

Mag-usap tayo pag may pagkakataon ha?”

At sumagot ako:

May pang-aabuso kayang nagaganap?

=================

Hayaan mo akong makinig. Pakiusap, L.”

“Ayaw ko ng makasakit ulit.”

“Hindi mangyayari iyon, pangako. Maupo muna tayo at mag-usap.”

“Ano it–”

“Anong sinasabi mo?”

“At gusto mo itong tapusin?”

“Oo.”

English Version

Leo wasn’t the same after tito Paul died. He’d ignore my messages and hole himself in his room. It became rarer and rarer to see him in school.

Back then we were only fifteen. We met in grade school and had been best friends for years. Both of us were the only child of our family and we bonded through that.

I didn’t want to pretend that I knew what he was going through. Most of the adults that I talked to told me to give him space, but that, to me, just felt like giving up.

Every afternoon I’d send the same message:

“Hey L it’s Rafa. I know you’re going through some stuff right now. I’m always here if you need me, to talk or just to be there. Hit me up when you can please. I’m really worried about you.”

He’d leave me on seen, which was still a relief for me. At least he’d know I was there.

After a week he finally messaged back:

“Hey R, sorry I didn’t get back to you ‘til now. Things have been getting too much to handle, haven’t been sleeping much. Thanks for reaching out to me, I really appreciate it. Let’s talk soon alright?”

And I replied:

“Of course L, I know tito Paul’s passing hit you hard. I know wherever he is now he’s wishing you’re alright.”

His reply unsettled me:

“He was a bastard.”

=————————————————————=

After that conversation Leo didn’t contact me for a month. He was the main topic of everyone’s gossip in school. Someone started the rumor that he was put in a mental institution and would have to stay there for the whole year. There was another where they said he ran away weeks ago and they found him in a ditch and the family wanted to keep his death a secret.

I tried to shut them down the best I could, but once the words were out in the air they couldn’t be brought down.

Leo’s last message still disconcerted me. I had known their family for years and they seemed to be happy.

Tita Tress was an OFW, she spent most of her time in Saudi, but would visit every now and then, every other year during holiday season. Tito Paul was a loud man, in the best sense of the term. He would always tell everyone about Leo’s achievements and would put them all over their sala.

My mind raced to all the possibilities of what Leo could have meant.

What was tito Paul like behind closed doors?  Was there any kind of abuse?

Why didn’t my best friend tell me?

Looking back, I realize how selfish I was, trying to make this about myself. Leo was the one that had the problem. If he didn’t want to tell me that was his choice.

I still messaged him every afternoon and he still would leave me on seen.

At the very least he’s alive. I’d think to myself.

I hung onto that thought to the latter part of that year. I was so scared that he’d leave my messages unseen and I’d never hear from him ever again.

I was just a scared kid that needed his best friend to be okay.

=———————————————————————————=

It was the end of the rainy season when I finally got a response from Leo. It was just one message but it filled my heart with hope. Leo was alive and I could finally see him.

MEET ME AT THE PARK TONIGHT AT 11

It was late. It was far. It didn’t matter.

Leo was my best friend and he needed me.

That night I told my parents that I was going to bed early. I was the requisite good boy. Good grades, well behaved, always on time, etc. My family wouldn’t suspect a thing.

The park was 3 kilometers away from me and I biked using the light of the moon. I was lucky there was a full moon that night.

When I got to the park I sat by the balete tree and waited for Leo.

“R?”

A hand gripped my shoulder from behind and my heart nearly jumped to my chest.
“Dammit L, don’t scare me like that! God!”

“Sorry.”

Leo looked awful. His hair was disheveled, eyes sunken and he was thinner than I’d ever seen him.

He tried to avoid eye contact and took a step back, knowing what he looked like.

I still gave him the biggest hug I could.

I didn’t know how much time passed and I thought it would be best for me to break the silence.

“I know things have been rough since your dad passed.”

“YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT HE TURNED ME INTO!”

The reply made me step back. Leo face was flooding with tears.

“You’re right, I don’t. But that’s why I’m here. Let me listen. Please, L.”

“I just don’t want to hurt anyone.”

“You won’t hurt me, I promise. Let’s just have a seat and talk, okay?”

“You should sit, I need you to see this.”

I did what he asked, sitting back by the balete tree. The whole park was illuminated by the light of the full moon.

Nothing could have prepared me for what Leo was about to do. Even now the memory horrifies me.

I could hear his spine crack as his neck turned.  His body shivered as it fell to the ground and what was left was hollow. I could see his heart beat and his lungs inflate as they detached.

He was floating through the air with nothing but his head and organs.

I vomited as the grisly spectacle finished.

He looked at me and I could still see the tears in his eyes. He said, “This is me. This is what I have become.”

The silence was heavy.

This time it was Leo who broke the silence.

He told me about his father. There was an inheritance from tito Paul’s side of the family, a curse that Leo only learned about as his father passed away. They were magtatangal, creatures that fed on human flesh who flew at night, searching for victims.

“I tried to be only catching cats and dogs, but every day the curse gets stronger. Every time I see someone at night I want to change and eat their hearts.”

“What about tita?”

“Papa kept the curse a secret from her, it’s why he pushed her to be an OFW.”

“This is why you haven’t talked to me.”

“Yes.”

“Why are you telling me this now?”

Leo floated to a tree a few meters away.

“Do you see that bag?”

“Yeah.”

“Open it.”

The bag was filled with salt and what looked to be a grey powder.
“What is—”

“If you put the salt and ashes on my body I won’t be able to reattach. Once the sun hits me….”

“What are you talking about?”

“If the ash and salt are sprinkled on my body, I won’t be able to reattach. If I cant be complete when the sun hits, I won’t be coming back from that.”

“You…..do you want me to kill you?!”

“I can’t keep doing this R. Every day my instincts tell me to kill people I see. Don’t you understand?! I’m going to hurt someone and then another and then another. It’s just going to get easier for me. Until I’m as much a monster as I look like.”

“It doesn’t have to be this way, we can find someone to talk to, there has to be something else we can do!”

Leo floated nearer to me.

“Did you know my dad kept trophies? He showed them to me before he gave me the curse. They were bones, small ones. There must have been hundreds of them.”

Another pause, another break in the silence.

“L, please don’t make me do this. I’m your best friend.”

“That’s why I’m telling you this. Please R. I don’t wat to hurt anyone else.”

Leo sobbed unceasingly, his tears falling onto his floating organs.

Memories started to flood my mind, the fear pulsing through my veins, until something struck me.

“Remember when we were ten and I thought I could fly?”

“Yeah your leg had to be in a cast for nearly half a year.”

“What’s it like to fly?”

“It’s the most liberating feeling you could ever have.”

“And you still want to end it?”

“Yes.”

I stood above his hollow body and sprinkled the salt and ash.

I looked at Leo in his eyes and asked him, “is there anything else you want me to do?”

“Can you stay with me? Until the sun comes up?”

“Anything for you.”

We sat there for hours waiting for sunrise. When it happened it was faster than I expected, Leo’s body and head disintegrated as soon as the sun rays hit them.

When my parents found out that I snuck out they were livid. I told them I was trying to find Leo and they eased out of punishing me. I think they saw that I was crying.

There was even more gossip after that. Leo ran away and was assumed dead was the most popular theory. I never corrected them and as the years passed people forgot.

=———————————————-=

To this day, I still remember him asking me to make the most difficult decision of our lives.

Goodbye L.

I’ll always miss you.

Negotiations are never easy, but eventually you see patterns in the way the bargains are done. I learned this from a savvy dwende I met a few years ago while clearing out a part of my brother’s farm. He gave me four very important lessons. Lessons that I must recall today because a datu has contracted me to move an angry spirit away from a tree he intends to cut. The life of an albularyo is never glamorous, but when you are called, there is little choice.

The first lesson is to approach your target with an open hand. Trust must first be offered before it is given, especially when you are asking for it. This also gives me an opening to see just what kind of spirit I’m dealing with. I open with a story about my hometown and the first spirit I ever spoke to. The tree is quiet for a while before it scolds me for wasting its time. I can sense the prideful scorn emanating from the leaves. A Magtitima. I soon realize this isn’t going to be easy.

I take a deep breath and remember the second lesson. It always pays to know what your terms are. I was given a modest offering from the datu, but I don’t know if it will be enough. The datu needs the tree to be cut down to build a new house that much I know. At least I did my research, the preferred offering of this spirit is a white chicken served with basi, a rice wine.

Lesson number three is to always make the first offer. Most other albularyos would wait, trying to see how much information they could get out of the spirit before making any sort of deal, but the dwede told me a different tactic. You have to set the stage, I give a low bid of a few bags of rice to start with.

The Magtitima is insulted and plays right into my hands. The fourth lesson now comes into play: always make them think they have the advantage. Every buyer wants to feel they got a good deal, so I start the back and forth. The spirit demands only the best gold and jewels and I apologize for the lacking resources in the datu’s coffers. I counter with some precious stones and an heirloom kris.

The negotiation takes hours of time and effort. A spirit must never be reminded that he is conversing with a mortal so I make sure he doesn’t see me sweat. After what seems like an eternity haggling offerings and prayers I finally bargain him down to five white chickens and seven bottles of basi.

I smile and tell him the datu will offer a celebration in commemoration of the powerful spirit’s great generosity, something that the Magtitima agrees to wholeheartedly. I tell the spirit that it can move to another tree by the river, one that is bigger than the other trees in the forest. The spirit’s pride is too much to contain and it moves there immediately, not even saying a word of goodbye.

I look up at the stars and realize it’s been more than half a day since I started talking to the spirit. I pack up my things and head to the datu’s house with the good news, hoping that I can get something for my troubles. An albularyo can never demand payment, only accept it.

The life of an albularyo is never glamorous, but when you are called, there is little choice.

English Version

“I can make it in two minutes. It’s only a few feet to the next building and I can run fast.” You can feel your heartbeat reverberate to your feet, your hands are cold and sweaty and the chill down your spine has been there for the better part of an hour. The muscles in your legs start to tighten and you take one deep breath before starting your sprint.

“This might be the last breath I’ll ever take.” The adrenaline surges through your body. Each step makes you feel like you’re the fastest person in the world. Your face betrays a smile, “This is it!” you think, “I made it!” Your objective is just a few steps away.

“Oh no.” You don’t know how it got there so fast. You were so sure that you were going to outrun it. The woman stares at you with her bulging red eyes and her hideous face twists in a scream. “No!” The voice in your head shouts “It wasn’t supposed to be this way!”

Your legs take you in the opposite direction, back to the relative safety of the tree. “Why didn’t I stay indoors?” The decisions all start coming back to haunt you “Why didn’t I take up running?”, “Why am I in this place?”, “Why didn’t I listen when I had the chance.” The voices in your head won’t stop talking.

The tree is in sight now. “It won’t be able to get past the branches.” You realize it’s been less than five minutes since you started running. Less than five minutes would make the difference between now and the rest of your life.

“One more step and I’m there.” Just one last dash and it won’t be able to grab you. There is a moment of doubt before you lunge under the tree and crash into the roots. You don’t feel much of the pain because of your adrenaline. “I’m still alive.” You’ve never been more grateful.

Until you put your hand to your chest. “No, no, no…” Your mind trails off. “It couldn’t have been that fast.” The blood starts to trickle down your fingers onto the rest of your clothes. “I made it, I’m supposed to be safe.”

You repeat those words in your head until there’s too much blood loss. “I should be safe.” Was what you thought before you closed your eyes. Maybe for the last time.

Lolid – Tagalog Translation https://phspirits.com/lolid-tagalog-translation/ Thu, 16 Sep 2021 11:10:44 +0000 https://phspirits.com/?p=3406

English Version

It’s been days since I got sick.

They tell me that it’s because I did something to anger the spirits, but I know I would never do that, not knowingly at least.

I knew I never should have gone out, nature isn’t my thing and after this I don’t think it will ever be.

I breathe deep as the babaylan passes me.

I take special care to see what he does during the ritual. He asks for a pot with a capacity of one ganta. He then asks for broken china plates which he puts inside the pot.

Then he calls for the lolid.

One guide tells me that I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. The lolid are invisible spirits that roll around because they have no limbs. It would have been impossible for me to see them.

The babaylan shakes the pot, causing a great commotion as he shouts:

“Do-ol na kamong mga lolid nga natomban

(Come here now invisible beings that were stepped)

Ari na ang among guibayad

(Here now is our payment)

Kuha-a na ang inyong kaligotgot sa mada-oton

(Remove now your anger from the patient)

(Come to me now and go with me to the bamboo thickets)”

The babaylan exits the house with the pot and shakes it until he reaches the bamboo groves close by. He places the pot on the ground and removes the cover as he leaves.

It is then that the ritual is completed.

The babaylan says that it will take a few days before I get better and I sigh with relief.

Coming from all this I know I learned one lesson:

I should watch where I step.

Alan – Tagalog Translation https://phspirits.com/alan-tagalog-translation/ Mon, 16 Aug 2021 08:46:35 +0000 https://phspirits.com/?p=3315

“At malupit sila.

English Version

Three hunters there were, closing in on their prey.
The first hunter said, “Look to the skies my fellow hunters, our prey stays in the trees.”

The second hunter replied, “Yes, my friend. These winged beasts will not harm our village anymore.”

The third hunter said, “Our blades must be sharp for its skin is as tough as a carabao’s hide.”

The three hunters gathered their weapons and trekked through the mountains.

It had been years since the first alan arrived in their village. Those were dark days when no man or woman would be brave enough to leave their homes for fear of never returning.

The alan took many away from the village, too many brothers and sisters. Too many children.

The hunters knew that they had to end this reign of terror through blood. Nothing else would do.

In the middle of the forest the three hunters sat and prepared a meal.

“Do not make a fire,” the first hunter said, “for the creatures of the night will be able to find us.”

“How will we cook our meal if we don’t have a fire?” said the second hunter.

“We will have to eat our food raw,” said the third hunter.
And they took out their provisions and ate.

The third hunter broke the silence by asking, “Have you heard how they make children?”

The second hunter replied, “A nasty business. I heard they take blood from miscarriages and mold it to become a child.”

The first hunter said, “Disgusting creatures. We’ll all be better off once they’re all dead.”

And to this all the hunters agreed.

The first hunter took watch over their camp.

“We will hunt them in the morning, when they are tired,” he said.

“I agree, it will be much easier to find them with the light of day,” said the second hunter.

“And we will be able to cut them down without any trouble,” said the third hunter.

“Be careful, brother, we must not underestimate these creatures,” replied the first hunter.

“That is true. I’ve heard they hang upside down from the limbs of trees and wait for their prey to pass under them, snatching up the poor soul with no chance of escape,” the second hunter intoned.

“I bow to your wisdom, brothers. Let us rest for the night and resume our hunt in the morning,” the third hunter said.
And so, the hunters took turns watching over their camp. With each rotation they became more aware of their surroundings, breathing in the paths of the forest. The night passed without incident and the hunters resumed their long trek through the underbrush.

“I must make a confession,” said the third hunter.

“What is it, brother?” replied the second hunter.

“I do not know what these creatures look like,” he admitted.
“Then listen close, brother. These creatures are deformed beings that lurk in the darkest parts of the forest. They are as large as you or I but they have wings that span the breadth of the limbs of trees. Their toes and fingers point backwards from their joints. Surely there is no other creature as ugly or as misshapen as the alan,” the first hunter replied.

“And they are vicious. They spare no mercy for any of their victims, not even the smallest ones,” said the second hunter.

And with this silence overtook the hunters.

They knew what the alan took from their village.

The hunters bowed their heads and drifted off to the realm of memory.

The first hunter remembered his wife and how she made him feel. Words could not describe the emptiness that filled his heart.

The second hunter remembered his brother’s laugh. They were twins and shared a bond no other could understand.
The third hunter remembered a white blanket in which laid his son. He was only a few weeks old when the alan took him.

They had decided enough was enough and banded together to fight these demons.

And now it came to this.

The three hunters circled a large balete tree. They could see the feathers of the creatures poking through the leaves.

They readied their blades and prepared to strike.
The creatures were caught by surprise and did not have enough time to retaliate. There were five creatures and though the odds were in their favor the beasts seemed to be caught unawares, giving the hunters ample time to cut them down.

What followed was a stream of talons and steel. An alan grabbed the second hunter and began to fly upward. It was only with his quick thinking that he managed to chop of the foot of the alan and rolled to the ground.

The first hunter fought three of the alan by himself. He hacked and slashed through their thick hides, dodging their blows and taking advantage of their confusion.
The third hunter stopped when he saw what the alan he faced was carrying.

It was his son, wrapped in a white blanket.

The third hunter dropped his sword and walked towards the alan that held his son. The creature did not attack and handed over the boy to his father.

The hunter wept as he cradled the baby in his arms. For all their viciousness the alan had not harmed children after all.
Before the hunter could respond the alan had flown away. The other hunters bandaged their wounds and screamed a cry of triumph.

But the third hunter could only think of his son, now safe in his embrace.

The two hunters continued on deeper in the forest, looking for more alan to hunt while the third hunter took his son and returned to the village.

They were never heard from again, though the pair were hailed as heroes by the village. Forever would the people remember the two brave hunters that stood against the monsters that threatened their way of life.

The third hunter and his son left the village to find a new life, far away from the chaos of the alan.
