Pakigistorya sa isa ka Kataw
Ako si Illuminado Acerden, baynte-kwatro anyos, naggikan sa barrio San Roque, sa Tolosa, Leyte. Nagaubra ako sa banko sa Manila, pero kutob makalugar, parehas sang bakasyon ukon paskwa, nagapuli ako sa amon lugar kag nagapamasyar sa akon ginikanan nga mga mangingisda.
Yara ako sa kilid sang lawod malapit sa amon balay sang una ko siya natalupangdan. Matahum, mas matahum pa sa bisan sino nga babahe nga nakita ko na antes sadto, kag mintras sadto. Nagasuksok sya sang bulawan nga korona sa babaw sang bulawan man nga buhok.
Nahadlok ko sa iya sang nahauna. Magapungko lamang ako sa baybay kag magatulok sa iya nga nagalangoy upod sa mga balud. Wala ako sang kaisog magpalapit. Sa indi madugay, siya na lamang nag kadto sa akon.
Kami nagistorya sugod sadto: parte sa kabuhi kag sa miskan ano nga pagkabutang. Ginsugidan niya ko sang mga baybayun nga indi malabot sang katawhan kag mga halimaw nga subong manami kag kaharadlukan. Pero sa kadamu-damo sang iya nga istorya, may isa gid siya nga ginasulit-sulit.
Gintistingan nakon pamangkot kung pwede ko makopya ang iya sugilanon, kag wala man siya namalibad. Siguro hindi man siya parehas katago sang ginahuna-huna ko.
Gindala ko akon instrumento kag nagpungko sa tupad sang tubig. Nagabot siya sang lapit nalang magsirum kag nagbulig pa gani sa akon preparar. Nalingaw gid siya sa instrumento ko nga bitbit—posible bag-o pa lamang siya kakita sadto na butang.
Yari ang amon pagsugilanon, sa kung paano gid namon ginsugilanon.
ILLUMINADO: Magasugod kita sa imo pangalan kung pwede.
KATAW: Ano imo ambot-silingon nga pangalan? Ano ina?
ILLUMINADO: Amo ina ang panawag sa imo sang iban. Siguro may ginatawag gid man sa imo?
KATAW: Gintawag ko nila nga nimpo sang una. Pero dugay-dugay na yadto nga tyempo.
ILLUMINADO: Sige. Pero siguro pagatawgon ka lang naton nga Kataw. Pwede na kita kasugod sa imo nga storya. Wala man guro problema sa imo kung magapamangkot ako kis-a para maklaro ang iban na punto?
KATAW: Wala gid kaso. Kamo daan nga mga tawo masyado gid ka interesado sa tanan na butang. Pamangkuta ako kutob sa mahimo mo.
ILLUMINADO: Diin nagasugod imo storya?
Kataw: Nagsugod tanan diri, pila na ka bulan ang nagligad.
ILLUMINADO: Diri sa San Roque?
KATAW: Huo, diri sa kung diin ninyo ginabilin inyo baruto. May yari diri duwa ka mag-abyan: si Rodrigo kag si Julian. Sila parehas tawo sang dagat.
ILLUMINADO: Mga mangingisda, intsakto?
KATAW: Tama. Pagakwaon nila ang ila dakop nga isda sa lawod kag dal-on sa barrio.
ILLUMINADO: Pwede mo ako mahambalan sang ila mga laragway?
KATAW: Si Rodrigo isa ka simple nga lalaki, pero syado ka anyag. Ang iya katahum makabato sa iya sang mga tawo sa akon kaharian. Mahal sya nga anak sa iya iloy. Si Julian naman ya lain; mas tigulang kag mas damo naagyan. Kabalo siya paano maghikot ang kalalawran kag iya ginahatagan pagtaha ang mga espiritu nga gaistar diri.
ILLUMINADO: Ano imo ambot-silingon sa pagtaha nga ina?
KATAW: Ang kadagatan indi gina tag-iya ka mga tawo, kundi delikado nga lugar kag puno sang mga engkanto. Ikamaayo niyo gid mahibaluan nga ang pagtaha nagadulot man sang pagtaha. Nga kung ang mga gahari diri sa lawod indi mapuno, ikaw kag imo katawhan indi na gid makadakop isda sa inyo pukot.
ILLUMINADO: Padayon, palihog.
KATAW: Ang ining duwa ka lalaki nagpangdagaton tubtub nga manaug ang adlaw, didto sa bahin sang baybay nga grabe ka dalum. Kabalo ang tanan na madamo didto isda, kag nga didto mo madakpan ang mga pinakamabugat. Apang sa hinali lamang, sila nakabati sang sonata nga indi para sa mga tawo. Nagbalikid sila kag ila nakita ang isa ka higante nga itom nga barko.
ILLUMINADO: Ano ang may ara sa barko?
KATAW: Madamo nga lalake kag babaye nga gabayle kag gaininom. Gusto man kung tani ni Rodrigo nga magintra sa ila, pero kabalo si Julian nga indi ato mga ordinaryo nga tawo. Ginmuno ni Rodrigo nga gusto niya gid magsaka sa barko. Apang ginsaway sya ni Julian kag ginhambalan na maghipos. Kabalo siya nga may gahum ang tinaga sa palibot sang engkanto kag ang pinakamaalam na himuon amo ang paglinong. Pero wala sina ya kabalo si Rodrigo. Iya ginpangabay sang katatlo ka beses nga ara siya sa barko, kag sa ikatatlo na tion si Julian nakabati sang tamsak sa tubig sa tupad ni Rodrigo.
ILLUMINADO: Ano ang natabo gilayon?
KATAW: Nakakita sila sang Kataw, parehas man sa akon. Iya guya gaidlak sa idalom sang pilak nga bulan. Namangkot ang Kataw kay Rodrigo kung gusto niya gid makakadto sa barko kag ang isa man mismo naghangdo nga wala pangduwa-duwa. Antes pa may mahambal si Julian, si Rodrigo naglumpat na sa tubig kag nadula sa idalom sang mga balud. Nagsinggitan si Julian sa kadadalman para sa iya upod, pero wala na ini sing may nabulig. Ginlamon na sang lawod si Rodrigo.
ILLUMINADO: Na ano si Rodrigo dayon?
KATAW: Ang kataw nagdala sa iya sa itom nga barko. Paagi sa iya gahum, nakaginhawa si Rodrigo sa tubig parehas sa kung ara siya sa duta. Sang ara na sila sa barko, ang ikog sang kataw nangin tiil kag sila nagsaot sa bilog nga kagabihon. Ginupod dayon sang kataw si Rodrigo sa iya kaharian sa dalum sang dagat, tapos niya magbalik sa iya pang-isda nga lawas. Si Rodrigo ginpakilala niya sa hari kag rayna sang kaharian—ang ginikanan man sang kataw. Nagapungko sila sa igang nga trono kag sa ila tunga may isa ka dako nga perlas. Wala na sang mas may dako pa sang sa sini nga nakita si Rodrigo. Sa sulod sang syam ka adlaw ginhatag sang kataw kay Rodrigo tanan nga manami nga butang sa iya kaharian, para malimtan niya ang iya barrio sa pangpang.
ILLUMINADO: Syam ka adlaw. Ngaa syam lang kaadlaw?
KATAW: Bangud nga sa ikanapulo, nagsugod na pangita si Rodrigo sang iya iloy. Nagpakitluoy siya sa kataw nga pabalikon siya sa iya barrio. Gintugotan niya ini, kay kabalo ang kataw nga gahigugmaanay sila. Ginhambalan sang kataw si Rodrigo nga sa hinali gusto na niya magbalik sa kaharian, pagatawagon ya lamang ang kataw sa baybay.
ILLUMINADO: Kag ginhimo man ina ni Rodrigo?
KATAW: Sa syam ka adlaw nga ara sa lawod si Rodrigo, iya iloy grabe gid ang kulba. Siya nagpangampo para sa iya nadula nga anak. Abi niya napatay na ato sa tunga sang kadagatan. Sobra ang iya kahadlok nga sang nagbalik na si Rodrigo, wala na niya ini ginpasugtan pa nga magbalik sa baybay.
ILLUMINADO: Syempre, wala siya namati sa iya iloy. Intsakto?
KATAW: Huo, bangud nga hugot gid ang pagpalangga niya sa kataw. Isa ka gab-i, samtang tulog na ang bilog nga barrio nila, nagkadto si Rodrigo sa pangpang kag nanawag sa kataw. Nagabot man ang kataw sa gilayon kag gindala siya balik sa kalalawran, kung diin sila nagtinir bilog nila nga kabuhi.
ILLUMINADO: Ano natabo kay Rodrigo tapos sina?
KATAW: Malip-ot lamang ang kabuhi sang isa ka tawo kung ikompara sa iya ka engkanto sa lawod. Lawig ang pagpalanggaanay sang duwa sa idalom sang dagat, apang nagtapos ato tanan sang mapait bangud nga may katubtuban gid ang bisan ano sa tunga sang anak sang duta kag anak sang tubig.
ILLUMINADO: Kag ano natabo ya sa kataw?
KATAW: Nagpalayo siya sa iya kaharian, asta nakalabot siya sa barrio sa kung diin si Rodrigo naghalin. Galangoy siya malapit sa pangpang para madumduman ang iya nadula nga amor. Ginapangaptan niya sang hugot ang kalipay sang ila pagpalanggaanay, pero ara permi ang kapait sang kamatuoran nga indi na niya mabalik ang naglipas na.
ILLUMINADO: Ambot-silingon nimo—ikaw ang—
KATAW: Ako atong gapalangga kay Rodrigo?
ILLUMINADO: Ikaw man ang sirena sa sina nga storya?
KATAW: Depende. Gakakita ko siya sa imo.
ILLUMINADO: Si Rodrigo?
KATAW: Indi. Indi ka kasarang magnaug sa dagat. Ginanamin nakon si Julian, ang abyan ni Rodrigo.
ILLUMINADO: Bangud nga maalam ako?
KATAW: Bangud nga kabalo ka nga ang engkanto indi parehas sa tawo.
Kag didto namon gintapos ang pakigstorya. Nagbalik ang kataw sa baybay. Wala ko na siya nakita pagkatapos sadto pero ang kopya sang amon pagdiskurso ginatago ko pa kutob nga makakita na ako sang pwede ko masaligan nga pagasugidan sang sini na storya.
May mga bati-bati nga sa San Roque may isa ka babaye nga isda ang hawak kag may bulawan nga buhok. Malipot lamang ang ila nga pagkakita sa iya, kag malaka, bangud nga ang lawod mismo ang gatago sa iya.
Pero nakahibalo ako nga asta subong, ginapangita niya sa gihapon iya gugma. Ang gugma nga nadula sa idalum sang mga balud.

An interview with a Sirena
My name is Illuminado Acerden. I am twenty-four years of age. I am from the village of San Roque, in Tolosa, Leyte. I work as a bank teller in Manila, but every holiday season I go back to my hometown to visit my parents who live as fisherfolk.
I was standing by the beach near my house when I first met her. She was beautiful, more beautiful than any woman I had ever seen before, or since. She wore a small crown of gold nestled within her golden hair.
I was afraid of her at first. I would sit quietly by the beach and would just watch her swim through the water like a gentle breeze. I wasn’t brave enough to approach her, she came to me.
We started to talk then, about life and all the things that surrounded it. She told me about the magic that she had, tales of seas unreachable by man and monsters both fantastical and mundane. Through all this was one story she would always go back to.
I asked her if I could record the story and, to my surprise, she agreed. It seemed that she was not as private as I once thought.
I collected my recording instruments and sat by the river. She came around sunset and even helped me set up. She was especially enamored by the recorder, it was probably the first time she saw such a thing.

ILLUMINADO: Can we start with your name please?
SIRENA: What do you mean ‘name’? What is a ‘name’?
ILLUMINADO: It is what other people call you, surely you’re called by something?
SIRENA: I was called a Sea Nymph once…. A very long time ago.
ILLUMINADO: Alright I guess we can just call you the sirena. We can start with your story, I hope that you don’t mind if I ask questions to clarify some points?
SIRENA: Of course, you humans are a very curious breed. Ask as many questions as you desire.
ILLUMINADO: So where does your story start?
SIRENA: It started here, many moons ago.
ILLUMINADO: Do you mean in San Roque?
SIRENA: Yes, where you humans leave your boats.
ILLUMINADO: Alright, please continue.
SIRENA: There was this pair of humans, one called Rodrigo and the other, Julian. They were both people of the water.
ILLUMINADO: Do you mean they were fisherfolk?
SIRENA: Yes, they took their catch of the fish of the sea and took it back to their village.
ILLUMINADO: Could you describe them?
SIRENA: Rodrigo was a simple man, though very handsome. His beauty could rival even the denizens of my kingdom. He was also devoted to his mother, a very filial son. Julian was different, much older and much more experienced. He knew the ways of the sea and gave proper respects to the spirits living there.
ILLUMINADO: What do you mean ‘proper respects’?
SIRENA: The sea does not belong to humans, it is a realm filled with danger and spirits. You would all do well to know that respect begets respect and if the spirits of the water are not sated your kind would never have fish in your nets.
ILLUMINADO: Please, continue your story.
SIRENA: The pair sailed until the sun went below the horizon, to a part of the sea that was deep. It held the promise of a better catch for the fish were larger than in the other waters. Suddenly, they heard music the likes of which were not for human ears. They turned and saw a gigantic black ship.
ILLUMINADO: What was happening on the ship?
SIRENA: There were men and women dancing and drinking jovially on the ship. Rodrigo wished he could join them, but Julian knew that these were no ordinary people. Rodrigo said out loud that he wished to be on the ship and Julian scolded him and told him to be quiet. He knew that words carry power around the enchanted and wisely kept his mouth shut. It was not the case for Rodrigo. He wished three times that he could be on the black boat and on the third time Julian was startled by a splash by Rodrigo’s side.
ILLUMINADO: What happened then?
SIRENA: They saw a beautiful sirena, one such as me. Her face glistened in the silver moonlight. The sirena asked Rodrigo if he wanted to go on the ship and the man answered ‘Yes!’, without delay. Before Julian could say anything, Rodrigo plunged into the water and vanished under the waves. Julian called loudly into the night for his companion, but it was no use. Rodrigo was with the sea.
ILLUMINADO: What happened to Rodrigo?
SIRENA: The sirena brought Rodrigo to the black ship through the water. With the aid of her magic he could breathe in the water as easily as he could on land. Once on the ship, the sirena’s fish tail became legs and they danced with each other the whole night. The sirena then brought Rodrigo to her kingdom under the sea, changing form once again to become half-fish. She introduced him to the king and queen of the kingdom, her parents. They were seated on an oyster throne and before them was a beautiful pearl larger than any Rodrigo had ever laid eyes on. For nine days the sirena gave to Rodrigo all the beautiful things in her kingdom, to make him forget of his village by the sea.
ILLUMINADO: Why only nine days?
SIRENA: On the ninth day Rodrigo began to miss his mother and begged the sirena to return him to his village. She did so, for she knew that they were in love and told him that if he ever wanted to return to her kingdom all he had to do was call her by the seashore.
ILLUMINADO: And did Rodrigo do that?
SIRENA: For the nine days that Rodrigo was missing his mother feared the worst. She said prayers for her lost son, convinced that he had died out at sea. When he returned she was so afraid of losing him again that he forbade him to ever go near the ocean.
ILLUMINADO: He didn’t listen to his mother, did he?
SIRENA: No, he loved the sirena too much. One night once everyone in the village was asleep he went to the shore and called out for his love. The sirena appeared and took him back to his kingdom where he spent the rest of his days.
ILLUMINADO: What happened to Rodrigo afterwards?
SIRENA: Humans do not live as long as the people of the sea. There were many good years that the sirena and Rodrigo spent with each other, years where love shined true. But afterwards there came the pain of knowing that things couldn’t last between a child of earth and a woman of the water.
ILLUMINADO: What happened to the sirena?
SIRENA: She traveled far from her kingdom, eventually going to the village where Rodrigo came from. She swam by the seashore in remembrance of her lost love, never forgetting the joy that she had when they were together but tempered by the pain of loss.
ILLUMINADO: Were you—- I mean—–
SIRENA: Was Rodrigo my lover?
ILLUMINADO: Yes, was the sirena you?
SIRENA: That is up to you to decide. You know you remind me of him.
ILLUMINADO: Of Rodrigo?
SIRENA: No, you would never travel under the sea. I mean Julian, Rodrigo’s friend.
ILLUMINADO: Because I’m wise?
SIRENA: Because you know that enchanted people aren’t like humans.
We ended the interview there and the sirena swam towards the ocean. I never saw her again and I keep the recordings with me until such time that I can find someone I trust enough to tell the story to.
There were tales of sightings of a half-fish woman with golden hair near San Roque, the witnesses only catching a glimpse of her before she vanished into the sea.
But I know that her heart is filled with longing for her love, forever lost beneath the waves.

*The Hiligaynon language, also colloquially referred often by most of its speakers simply as Ilonggo, is an Austronesian regional language spoken in the Philippines by about 9.1 million people, mainly in Western Visayas and SOCCSKSARGEN, most of whom belong to the Visayan ethnic group, mainly the Hiligaynons. It is the second-most widely spoken language and a member of the so-named Visayan language family and is more distantly related to other Philippine languages.
